Editorial Policy

The Historical Homes publishes researched stories and practical guides about historic houses, architecture, preservation, and noteworthy properties. Our goal is to help readers understand what makes a house historically and architecturally significant while clearly separating documented facts from interpretation.

Our editorial principles

Accuracy, context, transparency, and respect for historic resources guide our work. We aim to use specific language, identify locations and dates carefully, and avoid presenting an architectural opinion, listing description, or local tradition as an established fact.

How we research an article

Depending on the property and topic, research may include public property records, National Register nomination forms, state and local preservation records, library and archival collections, historical society material, newspapers, books, maps, photographs, real-estate listings, and information supplied by owners or listing representatives. A current sales listing can be useful for present-day measurements, amenities, photographs, and asking price, but it is not treated as the sole authority for historical claims.

When reliable sources disagree, we look for the source closest to the original record, explain uncertainty when it matters, and avoid forcing a conclusion. Dates described as “circa” remain approximate. Architectural style labels may also be qualified because many houses combine periods, additions, and later alterations.

Property listings and changing information

Price, availability, acreage, room counts, and listing status can change after publication. We record this information as a dated snapshot and encourage readers to confirm it with the listing agent, owner, public record, or another qualified professional. The Historical Homes is an editorial website, not a real-estate brokerage. Please read our Property & Real Estate Disclaimer before making a property decision.

Independence, advertising, and links

Advertising helps support the website, but advertisers do not receive the right to dictate our historical conclusions or editorial opinions. Sponsored or affiliate relationships, when used, should be disclosed near the relevant content. An external link is provided for context or reader convenience and does not automatically constitute an endorsement.

Images and attribution

We aim to use images that are licensed, provided with permission, in the public domain, or otherwise used with an appropriate basis. Credits are included when source information is available. Rights holders who believe an image or attribution needs review can use our contact page; please identify the page, image, and basis of the request.

Editing and AI-assisted tools

Editing or research-assistance tools may be used to organize notes, improve clarity, or check consistency. They do not replace source evaluation or editorial responsibility. Factual claims should be supported by reliable material, and articles are reviewed for clarity, attribution, internal consistency, and obvious errors before publication or a substantial update.

Corrections and updates

We correct material errors and update articles when stronger evidence becomes available. Minor spelling or formatting changes may be made without a note. A change that materially affects the identity, date, attribution, ownership history, or conclusion of an article may be explained in the article. See our Sources & Corrections page for the process.

Reader responsibility

Our content is educational and editorial. It is not legal, financial, engineering, inspection, preservation-compliance, or real-estate advice. Readers should consult the appropriate local authority or qualified professional for decisions involving a property.
